Meaning of Colours

Each stripe in Ogodogodo carries deep cultural and spiritual significance.

🌊

Blue – Peace & Unity

Symbolises harmony, togetherness, and the strong communal bonds of the Igede people. Blue is woven into fabric worn at ceremonies of reconciliation and community gatherings, where unity is celebrated.

☀️

White – Purity & Integrity

Represents honesty, moral values, and a life lived with truth and openness. White stripes appear prominently in ceremonial attire worn during rites of passage, marking transitions made with integrity.

🌱

Black – Agriculture & Resilience

Honours the fertile land and the strength required to cultivate and sustain life. For the Igede, the soil is sacred — black threads acknowledge the farmers and their covenant with the earth.

Colours in Everyday Life

The colours of Ogodogodo are not confined to ceremony. They appear in festivals, naming celebrations, funerals, and daily dress — each occasion calling for different combinations that communicate the wearer's intent and social standing.

An elder arriving in deep blue and white signals authority earned through peaceful leadership. A young man wearing black at harvest time honours his father's labour. These are not fashion choices — they are a living language.
